DSIP, or Delta sleep-inducing peptide, is a neuropeptide with an amino acid sequence of Тrр-Аlа-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu.
DSIP was first discovered in 1974 in Switzerland by the Schoenenberger-Monnier group. It was isolated from the cerebral venous fluid (blood in the brain) of rabbits that were in a state of deep sleep.
DSIP is believed to induce slow-wave (deep) sleep. DSIP is found in various tissues within the body including the hypothalamus, limbic system and pituitary as well as various peripheral organs, tissues and body fluids and the gut and pancreas secretory cells.
It is believed that DSIP has action in the brain on NMDA receptors, which are involved in regulating excitatory neurotransmission. The half-life in vitro has been shown to be only 15 minutes. However, it is believed that DSIP binds to carrier proteins to prolong its half-life and action.
